Terms of Service
Last updated: May 3, 2026
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of citekit.com and the free tools and content available on the site (the “Service”), operated by CiteKit (writerspress). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service.
The Service
CiteKit provides free citation, bibliography, and citation schema generators, along with style guides and reference materials about citation. The CiteKit WordPress plugin is available separately through the WordPress.org plugin directory and is governed by its own license (GPL v2 or later); use of citekit.com remains subject to these Terms.
Acceptable use
You agree to use the Service only for lawful purposes. You agree not to:
- Use the Service in any way that violates applicable law.
- Interfere with, disrupt, or attempt to compromise the security of the Service.
- Use automated means (bots, scrapers, crawlers) in ways that exceed reasonable use or place undue load on our infrastructure.
- Reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the Service except where permitted by law.
- Use the Service to generate or distribute spam, malware, or fraudulent content.
- Resell or commercially redistribute the Service or its output as a standalone product without our written permission.
Citation output
You retain full ownership of any citations you generate using the Service. Use them freely in your work – academic papers, blog posts, books, websites, or anywhere else citations belong. We make no claim of authorship or copyright over generated citations.
Accuracy
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied.
We take reasonable care to ensure that generated citations conform to the formatting rules of the styles they target (APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, IEEE, and others), but citation styles are complex and evolve over time. You are responsible for verifying the accuracy of any citation you use in your own work. We don’t guarantee that generated citations are free of errors, conform to the requirements of any specific publication or institution, or meet the standards of any particular style guide edition.
Intellectual property
All content on the Service – including text, graphics, logos, and the underlying tools is owned by CiteKit or our licensors and is protected by Canadian and international copyright and trademark laws. Apart from the citation output you generate, no content from the Service may be copied, modified, or used commercially without our prior written permission.
Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, CiteKit shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of your use of, or inability to use, the Service.
Our total aggregate liability arising out of these Terms or your use of the Service shall not exceed one hundred Canadian dollars (CAD $100).
Changes
We may modify or discontinue the Service at any time, with or without notice. We may also revise these Terms from time to time. The “Last updated” date above reflects the most recent changes. Continued use of the Service after revisions constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any dispute arising out of these Terms or the Service shall be resolved in the courts located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
