Reference Library
The Reference Library is where Reference Manager for Web stores and organizes reusable References. Add a Source, save its structured information as a Reference, organize that Reference into one or more Reference Sets, and use those References across CiteKit’s citation, bibliography, checking, schema, and publishing workflows.
The Reference Library is the shared collection behind Reference Manager for Web. A Reference represents a Source; a Reference Set groups References for a particular article, project, publication, client, topic, or other workflow.
What lives in the Reference Library
The Reference Library stores References, not finished citations. Each Reference is a structured CiteKit record representing a Source and can contain Source Metadata such as:
- author or organization
- title
- publication date
- journal, publication, or publisher
- DOI, ISBN, PMID, or URL
- source type
- other source-specific fields
A citation is generated from a Reference when that Reference is used in a citation style or publishing output. Keeping the Reference separate from the formatted citation means the same Source can be reused in different styles, Reference Sets, bibliographies, and publishing workflows without rebuilding its metadata each time.
What a Reference Set is
A Reference Set is a named group of References from the Reference Library. Reference Sets provide organization without creating separate copies of the underlying Reference.
Common ways to organize Reference Sets include:
- One set per article or report — keep the References behind one published work together.
- One set per topic — maintain a reusable collection for subjects you cover repeatedly.
- One set per client or project — keep project research separate from other work.
- One set per publication or content series — group References that repeatedly support the same publishing workflow.
- One set per academic or research project — organize References around a paper, chapter, course, dataset, or research question.
The same Reference can belong to more than one Reference Set. Adding it to another set reuses the Reference; it does not create another independent source record.
How to use the Reference Library
- Open the Reference Library at citekit.com/reference-library/.
- Add a Source using a supported identifier, URL, search, AI/LLM source entry, or manual source entry.
- Review and save the Reference so the Source Metadata becomes a reusable record in the Reference Library.
- Add the Reference to a Reference Set when you want to organize it around a particular article, project, topic, or publication.
- Reuse the Reference in other sets or CiteKit tools without re-entering its Source Metadata.
Adding Sources
Reference Manager for Web can turn supported source information into structured References. Depending on the source and workflow, you can begin with:
- a URL
- a DOI
- an ISBN
- a PubMed ID
- a title or keyword search
- an AI or LLM source
- manual Source Metadata
The result is a Reference that can be stored, edited, organized into Reference Sets, and reused across CiteKit.
Editing References
Edit the Reference when the underlying Source Metadata needs to change. For example, you might correct an author name, add a DOI, update a URL, change the Source Type, or complete missing publication information.
Because the Reference is reusable, you do not need to maintain a separate edited copy for every Reference Set. The Reference remains the underlying record used wherever it is organized or published.
Using one Reference in multiple sets
A single Reference can participate in multiple Reference Sets. For example, the same government report could belong to:
- a Reference Set for a current article,
- a long-running topic set, and
- a client-specific research set.
All three sets can point to the same reusable Reference in the Reference Library.
Removing References and deleting sets
Removing a Reference from a Reference Set removes that organizational relationship; it does not necessarily mean deleting the Reference from the Reference Library.
Likewise, deleting a Reference Set removes the grouping. References that remain useful can stay in the Reference Library and continue to be used in other sets or workflows.
Delete the Reference itself only when you no longer want that Source record available in the Reference Library.
What the Reference Library does across CiteKit
The Reference Library provides reusable source records to other CiteKit tools and publishing workflows:
- Citation Generator can create a formatted citation from Source Metadata and save the underlying Reference for reuse.
- Bibliography Generator can format References from a Reference Set as a bibliography in the citation style you choose.
- Citation Link Checker can check source identifiers and URLs associated with References before publication.
- Citation Schema Generator can use structured Reference data to produce Citation Schema in Schema.org JSON-LD.
- Live Source List Embed can publish a Reference Set as a live source list or bibliography on another website while keeping the published output connected to the underlying Reference data.
Formatting References as a bibliography
A Reference Set can be sent to the Bibliography Generator to produce a citation-style-formatted bibliography.
The bibliography is an output generated from the underlying References. The References themselves remain in the Reference Library and can be reused again in another style, another set, or another publishing workflow.
Publishing a Reference Set
When you want a Reference Set to remain connected to CiteKit after publication, use the Live Source List Embed.
The Live Source List Embed publishes the References in a Reference Set as a live source list or bibliography on another website. Because the published output remains connected to the underlying Reference data, updates to those References can flow through to the embedded output.
For a one-time output that does not need to stay connected to CiteKit, generate and publish a static bibliography instead.
Reference Manager for Web and Reference Manager for WordPress
Reference Manager for Web manages reusable References and Reference Sets outside a single CMS and carries them into web publishing workflows.
Reference Manager for WordPress manages References directly inside WordPress and publishes citations, footnotes, tooltips, and bibliographies within WordPress content.
They share the same core CiteKit concepts — Source, Reference, Reference Library, Reference Set, Citation, and Bibliography — while serving different publishing environments.
